Attorney Shawn DominyCOLUMBUS, OHIO, UNITED STATES, October 15, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (OACDL) is a statewide organization of approximately 700 lawyers committed to defending the rights of persons accused of committing criminal offenses. The organization is operated by an executive director and elected officers, led by the President. For the past year, the President was Columbus attorney Shawn Dominy.
Last week, Dominy completed his term as President. He commented, “It has been an honor serving the OACDL in this capacity. I was privileged to work with some amazing people for a worthy purpose.”
Dominy said the ‘worthy purpose’ may surprise some people. Many may not fully understand the vital role filled by criminal defense attorneys in maintaining a democracy. Instead, they view defense lawyers as exploiting ‘loopholes’ to help guilty criminals avoid punishment.
The Founders of this nation did not hold that view. They came here from England at a time when most defendants were not permitted to have legal representation. The Framers reacted to this injustice by guaranteeing the right to counsel and protecting the right to a fair trial. They believed the right to a fair trial is a cornerstone of individual freedom because it prevents the government from wrongfully charging a person with a crime and obtaining a conviction through an unfair trial.
For criminal defense lawyers to fulfill their Constitutional duties, it is important for them to cultivate skills. The mission of the OACDL is to instruct and train attorneys for the purpose of developing and improving their capabilities and “to promote the advancement of knowledge of the law as it relates to the protection of the rights of persons accused of criminal conduct”. The OACDL pursues that mission by providing seminars, publications, and communications related to the practice of criminal defense.
Dominy said the mission of the Dominy Law Firm includes the objective of contributing to the legal system. He stated, “We believe we should not only work in the legal profession but also work on the legal profession. For us, that means helping to improve the effectiveness of defense lawyers and thereby improving the effectiveness of the justice system.” Although his term as President has ended, Dominy will continue to contribute to the OACDL in the role of Immediate Past President, part of the organization’s Executive Committee.
