Plano, TX, January 14, 2021 — Dr. Dain Brooks and the team at Brooks Eye Associates have become the first provider in the northern Dallas-Fort Worth metro area — and among the first in the nation — to use Alcon’s AcrySof IQ Vivity Extended Vision Intraocular Lens (IOL) by Alcon Laboratories in a lens replacement procedure.
A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Brooks has been known as a regional leader and pioneer in the most advanced cataract surgery techniques for decades. This is what led Alcon to extend the invitation to Dr. Brooks to offer the Vivity lens to his patients before their widespread release.
“It is certainly a privilege to have early access to this technology,” said Dr. Brooks. “Not only is it a great recognition for myself and my team, it’s another tool I can use to offer clear vision to an even larger number of patients.”
Alcon’s Vivity lens received FDA approval in February 2020, and surgeons like Dr. Brooks are excited about its potential as a complement to another Alcon lens, the AcrySof® PanOptix® Trifocal IOL. The PanOptix is thought to be among the best in advanced artificial lens technology, but not every patient is the perfect candidate due to pre-existing eye health conditions like glaucoma or a range of retinal conditions.
The Vivity lens is made of a softer material that is more responsive to imperfections in the eye, which enables people managing eye health issues to be able to have access to clear vision at most distances. “The Vivity lens is a great fit for many patients,” said Rebecca Miller, O.D., who is heavily involved with the cataract patient experience at Brooks Eye Associates. “But one of the largest opportunities for this new technology is to open up a new category for people who would otherwise be told that a basic lens would be a better option for them.”
Early results with Alcon’s latest IOL have been promising. “Patients really appreciate what the new lenses are doing for their sight,” added Dr. Miller. “They have improved vision at all ranges, and while they may need reading glasses for exceptionally small print, our patients feel good knowing they won’t be relying on them all the time.”
Dr. Brooks and his team are currently booking cataract surgery consults and appointments at Brooks Eye Associates in Plano, using these and a range of other advanced technology lenses.
