This “novel” new web-app offers users an immersive-audio (wherein audio is aligned word-for-word with text) reading experience in which classic Arabic novels, like the famous adventure story, ‘1001 Nights’, have been transformed into interactive language learning tools. Novel Arabic has launched their app at a moment when more non-native speakers than ever have recognized the value of learning Arabic. According to the CIA World Factbook, Arabic is now the third most-spoken first language, representing 5.1% of the global population, exactly the same as English.
As one of the UN’s official languages, the Arabic language is beneficial for people who want to work in international business or diplomacy, who want to travel throughout Africa and the Middle East, who live in an Arabic-speaking neighborhood in their hometown, or who simply want to broaden their intercultural understanding and linguistic flexibility.

The app presents learners with entire classic adventure novels, in which every word has been audio narrated and aligned with the text, and accompanied by an English translation.
Each chapter has a correlating word bank, taught through an in-built spaced-repetition flashcard functionality. Then, once students have been taken through the guided reading of the chapter, they will be prompted to return to it and to these words. Here, they will pass through a three-stage process which slowly removes the translated English text as their native understanding of the language grows. The idea is to keep the student in a high-comprehension state, while introducing a complex new paragraph.
Novel Arabic is an interesting experiment in providing a smooth learning on-ramp to a very highly difficult and literary language — teaching Arabic both the intricacies and joys of the language through an engaging process of adventure reading.
