After the first batch of films to be screened was announced last week, the Beijing Film Panorama has attracted particular attention. For example, the sections such as Restored Classics, Filmmaker in Focus and Vision whet the appetite of film fans. Now the complete list of over 180 films to be screened is announced. Firstly in the Retrospective Section, apart from the films directed by Seijun Suzuki, six digitally restored classics directed by Yonfan, the photographer, writer and director who lives in Hong Kong, China, will also be screened during this year’s BJIFF where the 4K restoration version of Story of Rose will have its world premiere in Beijing. Mr. Yonfan will attend in person the meet-and-greet after the screening of Story of Rose and Breaking the Window.
Posters of A City of Sadness and The Conformist
Two masterpieces are included in the Restored Classics Section, namely A City of Sadness directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien and The Conformist directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. The former will have its Chinese Mainland’s premiere in Beijing with the new 4K restoration version. The film’s producer Mr. Chiu Fu-sheng, the film editing master Liao Ching-Sung familiar to Beijing film-goers as “Sensei Liao”, and the seasoned filmmaker Arthur Chu, who strongly supports the film’s digital restoration, will attend the meet-and-greet in person.

The Japan Film Week, now added to the Vision Section, and the previously announced Thailand Film Week will deliver a cross-culture feast. A record of the longest Chinese-language film title is created by the Japanese film Mondays: See You ‘This’ Week! to be screened in this section. The iconic producer of Your Name and Suzume, Genki Kawamura, will attend the BJIFF with his directorial debut A Hundred Flowers. The film, starred by Masaki Suda, Masami Nagasawa and other Japanese stars, won the Silver Shell for Best Director at the 70th San Sebastian International Film Festival and is a must-see.
Poser of Fallen Angel and Hong Kong Family
The Chinese New Wave Section, which is mutually complementary to the Vision Section, is full of surprises. The 4K restoration version of Fallen Angel and A Moment of Romance will be screened under the theme of Making Waves – Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema together with several newcomers, including Vital Sign, Hong Kong Family, Lost Love and Wave of All Flesh; One Mountain Away, The Sun Shines on Tashkurgan and several other films will be screened during the Beijing Ethnic Film Festival to depict the colorful life of Chinese ethnic minorities; the filmmakers of Kong and Jigme, One and Four and other screened films will come to the BJIFF and have face-to-face communication with the cinema audiences.

The Animations Section features new hit films such as White Plastic Sky, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman and Lupin the 3rd vs Cats Eye, as well as legendary classics such as Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Howl’s Moving Castle.
In addition, other sections also include noteworthy and amazing films.

For example, the film Come With Me to the Cinema – The Gregors included in the Reality Rocks Section focuses on the couple who cement the foundation of the Berlinale Forum, Ulrich Gregor and Erika Gregor, and the big shots in the film industry who are close to them: Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch and Jutta Brückner. They all appeared in the film.

The film Mama included in the Women’s Voice event has been screened at many major film festivals at home and abroad, and this time its director Li Dongmei will attend the meet-and-greet.

The film The Cage is Looking for a Bird included in the Dimension Section is the feature debut of the Russian female director Malika Musaeva who born in 1992, and it was premiered in the Encounters Section of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival.

The XR Section, with “moving” as its theme, will screen 13 Chinese and international award-winning films. The interactions, such as eye tracking and gesture capture, will be incorporated into the context of the film festival together with theatrical performance, game and music. The film-goers can explore the history with End of Night, which won the Best VR Story prize at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival, experience the world of music created by Jean-Michel Jarre, a French legendary composer for his electronic music concert, and embark on the journey of memory of Before Your Eyes with their eyes and hands. The XR Section will feature live performance, salon and other online and offline interactive activities to further explore the disappearing boundary between the virtual world and the real world.
