In this report, Technavio covers the market outlook and growth prospects of the global alcohol testing equipment market for 2016-2020. By product type, this market is segmented into breathalyzers, urine test equipment, and saliva test equipment.

Alcohol-related fatalities have led to strict regulations regarding drunk driving. Increase in individuals driving under the influence (DUI) has been the major driver of the alcohol testing equipment market. Breathalyzers are predominantly used by the law enforcement agencies worldwide to get quick, yet accurate measurement of blood alcohol content (BAC). Over 65% of the breathalyzers used by law enforcement officers globally use fuel cell technology to measure BAC.

Technavio’s research study segments the global alcohol testing equipment market into the following regions:

  • North America
  • Europe
  • APAC
  • ROW

North America: largest alcohol testing equipment market

Drunk driving is a major problem in the US where more than eight people are killed each day due to drivers driving under the influence (DUI). To combat this, the US government has come up with strict regulations and actions against offenders. Elaborating on this, Abhay Sinha, one of the lead research analysts at Technavio says, “In the US, if the blood alcohol content of the driver is 0.08 grams per deciliter or higher, they are considered as alcohol impaired. Any person found driving over the speed limit, or causing fatalities, are checked for sobriety using alcohol testing equipment. Alcohol testing equipment is also used at approved checkpoints in the US.

In addition to law enforcement officers, many people purchase alcohol testing equipment to prevent any accidents and paying harsh penalties for DUI cases. Parents also buy this equipment to keep a check on their underage kids, enforcing a zero-tolerance. These two segments will create the highest demand, after governments, thus driving the alcohol testing equipment market during the forecast period.

Europe

Many countries across Europe have been implementing innovative measures to curb drunk driving related fatalities. Governments have implemented the use of media campaigns to support road safety and curb drunken driving. There has been an increase in number of randomized roadside alcohol breath tests, which makes for a more conscious and careful driving demographic. Countries like Scotland, Wales, and Ireland have decreased the drunk driving limit. Traffic police in Estonia, Poland and Finland carry out up to 650 driver checks per 1000 inhabitants. All these initiatives have brought down drunk driving related fatalities significantly. These positive results will enforce further use of alcohol testing equipment, thus driving the market forward.

APAC

The developing countries in APAC are quickly adopting Western models to curb drunk driving. Detailing the regulations implemented, Abhay says, “In India, the penalty for drunk driving was increased by almost 5 times. The new Motor Vehicle Bill 2016 which was introduced aims to improve safety on Indian roads. In China, the traffic regulations mandate license suspension for any driver exceeding the legal limit of the alcohol content in bloodstream. Additionally, random alcohol tests are conducted in various countries in APAC.

In Cambodia, the government provided training to traffic police officials, as well as provided direct coaching regarding the use of breathalyzers at the enforcement checkpoints in 25 provinces. These practices are slowly improving road safety and alcohol influenced accidents. The stringent regulations along with random alcohol tests have increased the demand for alcohol testing equipment in the region by both law enforcement and personal users in APAC.

ROW

Other regions of the world are not far behind in introducing regulations to curb drunk driving fatalities. African countries have introduced evidentiary breath testing in 2015, and adopted the wide scale use of breathalyzers. Mexico carried out a training program with the aim “Towards Zero Deaths from Drinking and Driving” (Cero Muertes Por Alcohol al Volante). The police and other road safety practitioners were given the training to conduct proper checks to prevent alcohol-related road fatalities. Thus, the demand for breathalyzers and other alcohol testing equipment is also increasing from the region.

The top vendors in the global alcohol testing equipment market highlighted in the report are:
