Column: The cause and effect of occupational diseases

In 1920, the New York State Legislature first allowed for workers’ compensation claims arising from occupational diseases by creating a statutory “schedule” of diseases. The schedule, located in Section 3 of the Workers’ Compensation Law, listed 23 diseases deemed occupational by the Legislature, and it included a corresponding industrial process for each.
