Hamilton, Ontario - March 2, 2026 - SEO influencer Matt Diamante, founder of HeyTony, and SEO strategist Edward Sturm have released new research demonstrating that adding attributed expert quotes to informational content can significantly accelerate citation in Google’s AI Overviews.
The findings, discussed on Edward Sturm’s SEO podcast, emerged from controlled publishing tests designed to isolate factors influencing AI-driven search visibility.
Research Findings: Expert Quotes Impact AI Citation Speed
During repeated content publishing tests, Diamante’s team observed:
-
Articles that included a clearly attributed expert quote were cited in Google AI Overviews within approximately two hours of publication.
-
Similar content published without expert quotes showed slower or weaker AI citation performance.
-
The primary variable adjusted between test articles was the addition of a real, attributed expert source.
“We found that the only meaningful difference was the presence of a real, attributed expert quote,” said Matt Diamante during the discussion.
The cited research focused specifically on top-of-funnel, informational blog content designed to build topical authority.
Supporting SEO Evidence: Outbound Links and Authority Signals
The discussion also referenced prior experimental SEO findings on outbound linking. In a controlled study involving ten pages targeting a fabricated keyword, five pages included outbound links while five did not. All five pages with outbound links ranked above those without.
According to Sturm, “Every single page with outbound links outranked the pages without them.”
These findings align with broader search engine guidance encouraging citation of authoritative sources.
Why Expert Quotes May Influence AI Systems
Diamante and Sturm hypothesize that AI systems and search engines interpret attributed expert commentary as:
-
A credibility signal
-
Evidence of factual sourcing
-
Reinforcement of topical authority
-
Alignment with E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) principles
“External links show that you’re not just making things up,” Diamante noted in the episode.
The research suggests that structured attribution may help AI systems more confidently cite web content as a trusted source.
SEO in the AI Era
The findings contribute to the growing conversation around SEO in the age of AI-driven search.
“I don’t think SEO for LLMs is completely different,” Diamante said. “It’s becoming more aligned with what users actually want.”
Both experts emphasize that the strategy applies primarily to informational content, not transactional or bottom-of-funnel sales pages.
