Inside a Veteran by EvrShft / Thomas Edward Coca III is a moving and deeply personal literary work that brings together poems, short reflections, quotes, and song-style writings drawn from the author’s life experiences as a veteran, artist, and survivor. Honest, vulnerable, and emotionally resonant, the book invites readers into a world shaped by service, loss, pain, memory, and hope.
About the Book:
Inside a Veteran is, at its core, a deeply personal reflection. Rather than following a single, continuous plot, the book unfolds through a number of evocative pieces that depict the author’s inner struggles and resilient moments. Through themes of love, heartbreak, war trauma, PTSD, loneliness, identity, healing, and humanity, the book provides an unvarnished glimpse into the emotional realities of a veteran’s experience.
Writing under the pen name EvrShft, Thomas Edward Coca III draws on a life marked by struggle, metamorphosis, and inventive survival. He was born in California and raised in Oregon, and at a young age, he discovered that his course had changed. His life was irrevocably altered in the wake of the September 11 attacks after enrolling in a military school program and then joining the Marine Corps, which led to his deployment in advance of the Iraq War. He suffered a terrible ambush while serving, which left him emotionally and physically scarred. Due to severe PTSD, he was medically discharged and had to face another challenging chapter of loss and uncertainty when he returned home.
It was through art that Thomas found a way forward.
Writing became one of the most important tools in his healing journey, offering him an outlet to process trauma, grief, confusion, and emotional pain. Over time, that creative expression became a lifeline. Inside a Veteran stands as a reflection of that journey, showing how art can become a source of strength when words are otherwise hard to find.
