About Fatima Mili, MD, PhD
When growing up, Dr. Mili was a student who excelled in math and science. Though her first career choice as a teenager was to become a marine biologist, she ultimately pursued medicine instead.
Highly educated, Dr. Mili earned a Doctor of Medicine, with clinical rotations, from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, in 1981. She gained experience in pathology experimental research at King's College Hospital in London and then completed a residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at Tunis University Hospitals. She later received a master's degree in epidemiology from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in 1989. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology with the prestigious Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Epidemic Intelligence Service from 1989 to 1991. Later, in 1997, Dr. Mili earned a doctorate in epidemiology from the Emory University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
For 36 years, Dr. Mili has been working in CDC-affiliated positions. Currently, her role at the CDC is to study the causes of diseases and how they spread throughout human populations.
As a medical doctor and public health scientist, Dr. Mili uses data and statistics from around the world to study health problems, including genetic conditions, chronic illnesses, HIV, tuberculosis and COVID-19. She uses health information, including patient medical records, disease registries and large national surveys. Her research concentrates on why ethnic minorities and underserved groups have worse health outcomes than other communities. Dr. Mili's findings have been used in discussions in political spaces, such as the U.S. Congress, to address health care inequalities.
During public health emergencies, Dr. Mili has played a major role in CDC responses. She has helped lead teams during outbreaks. Part of her work involves collaborating closely with experts from other government agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration and the White House, to review and interpret data to help guide decision-making.
Also active as a teacher and mentor to future professionals in her field, Dr. Mili shares her knowledge with medical trainees, young doctors, scientists and other public health researchers.
Making a Notable Impact on Science
Outside of her primary endeavors, Dr. Mili is the author of numerous scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed chapters to medical textbooks. She has also presented scholarly presentations at national and international scientific meetings and conferences.
Dr. Mili's extensive experience also includes working on multidisciplinary projects with members from various scientific and management backgrounds. She is a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service Alumni Association, the CDC Employee Association of Emory Alumni and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors. When affiliated with the Research Triangle Institute, she was a member of the institutional review board and used her medical expertise to review and approve scientific and research protocols on national and global health issues.

In addition to a full fellowship at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Emory University, she subsequently earned an Outstanding Epidemic Intelligence Service Award from the CDC.
