Marquis Who's Who Honors Tracey Scherban, PhD, as Top Scientist

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / February 5, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who honors Dr. Tracey Scherban, PhD, as a top scientist. Dr. Scherban is the chair of the Women Chemists Committee of the American Chemical Society in Portland, Oregon.

About Dr. Scherban

In her role as chair, Dr. Scherban organizes events to encourage interested parties to embrace science with the American Chemical Society. She is currently working on a Women in Science symposium in memory of her late friend, Elaine Nam. This symposium is modeled after the one Ms. Nam had co-organized with Dr. Scherban on behalf of the society in 2018.

Dr. Scherban's goal is to make the event even better than the previous one. The central message of the event is to advocate for better representation of women as Nobel laureates. The program for the Women in Science symposium will feature five speakers, 12 panelists and two panels, with 30 STEM professionals from various fields in attendance. Dr. Scherban says she is targeting 100 students, comprising 50 high school students and 50 college students.

"We'll have something called a ‘meet a mentor lunch' where students and professionals will be randomly assigned to tables, allowing them to engage in informal discussions about science and anything else they wish to talk about," Dr. Scherban explains.

Dr. Scherban selected a philosophy professor from Reed College to present on "the progression of science in humanity through Aristotle's four elements: fire, air, earth and water." The event's logo features a female symbol at its center, surrounded by the four elements, symbolizing the empowerment of women in science. The symposium will conclude with a stirring tribute to Elaine Nam, sung by a jazz singer, a fitting tribute to her influence on the event's legacy.

Success in STEM

Dr. Scherban has had a successful career in the STEM fields. Dr. Scherban earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Reed College, a master's degree in solid state science and a doctorate in material science from Columbia University. Her postdoctoral work was at Laboratoire d'Ionique et d'Electrochimie du Solide, France.

Early in her career at Intel Corporation, Dr. Scherban served as a thermal mechanics group leader and experienced one of the highlights of her career when she demonstrated her ingenuity and quelled the doubts of others. At the time she joined Intel, the company lacked the necessary infrastructure to measure the mechanical properties of thin films, which was causing chip failures due to delamination. The test used at the time on the chips wasn't precise, so Dr. Scherban, in collaboration with Stanford University, developed a more reliable technique called four-point bending.

A Commitment to Success

Dr. Scherban explains that she had to attend high-level meetings attended by vice presidents to evaluate the progress of her team's work throughout the process, largely due to skepticism about her project. After three years, Dr. Scherban confidently presented the team's findings to a key figure who was overseeing the project and demonstrated its successful outcome. This proof ended the intensive review meetings she'd been subjected to, which she wryly considers one of her greatest accomplishments.

Dr. Scherban also served as an adjunct professor at Portland State University and a chemistry instructor at Portland Community College.

Dr. Scherban believes that several key factors have contributed to a prosperous career. She has had excellent mentors throughout her career and has enjoyed the support and encouragement of accomplished friends. From her family, she has drawn a wealth of inspiration. For her own part, a sense of confidence and belief in her abilities continues to fuel her success.
