VIVAZEN® Applauds Kentucky’s Leadership in Protecting Consumers from Synthetic 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)

The company supports science-based regulation that distinguishes the natural botanical kratom from dangerous synthetics

VIVAZEN®, a leading botanical wellness company specializing in natural, full-spectrum kratom products, expressed strong support for Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Health and Family Services Secretary Dr. Steven Stack following the announcement that the state will move to classify isolated and concentrated forms of 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) as Schedule I narcotics.

Governor Beshear’s action will make it illegal to sell or distribute products containing synthetic or concentrated 7-OH in Kentucky, placing the compound in the same category as other dangerous Schedule I substances.

“This is the kind of science-based leadership that helps protect both consumers and the integrity of natural products,” said Steve Curtis, Chief Executive Officer of VIVAZEN®. “From the beginning, we have made our position clear. Synthetic products like 7-OH have no place in the kratom market. Natural, full-spectrum kratom products, responsibly formulated, tested, labeled, and manufactured, are fundamentally different and should be regulated as such.”

VIVAZEN® has long supported clear, evidence-driven regulation through frameworks such as Kratom Consumer Protection Acts (KCPA), which establishes rigorous testing, labeling, and age restrictions to ensure consumer safety. The company believes the future of the botanical industry depends on transparency, consistency, and science.

All VIVAZEN® products are derived from natural kratom leaf and extract, with no synthetic additives. As part of its quality commitment, VIVAZEN® proactively tests every batch for 7-OH and confirms it is not detected.

“We commend Governor Beshear and Secretary Stack for recognizing that the problem is not kratom itself but the misrepresentation and misuse of laboratory-altered compounds that pretend to be kratom,” Curtis added. “Their approach will help protect Kentuckians from dangerous synthetic substances while preserving access to natural botanical products that millions of Americans rely on for well-being.”

Kratom, derived from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia, has been used for centuries for its energizing and discomfort-relieving properties. Research from major universities such as Johns Hopkins and the University of Florida has shown that natural kratom, when used responsibly, may offer beneficial effects with a relatively low potential for harm. In contrast, synthetic 7-OH carries high risks that include respiratory depression and dependence.

“We share the same goal as regulators and public health leaders, which is to keep unsafe or adulterated products out of the marketplace,” Curtis said. “Kentucky’s decision sets an important example of how states can protect consumers through fact-based action without penalizing natural, traditional botanicals.”

VIVAZEN® remains committed to working with state and federal officials to promote consistent quality standards, transparent labeling, and ongoing education about the difference between natural plant-based kratom and synthetic derivatives.
