Serval brings the software supply chain security startup in-house as its founder becomes the company's Head of Security.
Serval, the enterprise service management platform built for the AI era, today announced it has acquired Ensignia, a software supply chain security startup, and named Ensignia founder and CEO Sam Stewart as Serval's Head of Security.
As Head of Security, Stewart will lead Serval's security function, spanning detection and response, corporate security, application security, and infrastructure security, including the guardrails, permissions, and audit trails that govern how Serval's automation agents interact with customer systems.
Serval runs IT for a fast-growing roster of companies that today includes Fox, Live Nation, Notion, Legora, Clay, Mercor, and others. Ensignia's discipline for verifying that code and infrastructure are built and shipped correctly gives Serval a strong foundation and added security layer.
"Information Technology sits at the center of a company's most sensitive systems: employee access, credentials, endpoints, and the automations that touch all of them. If that layer isn't secure, nothing else matters," said Alex McLeod, co-founder and CTO of Serval. "We built Serval on the premise that automation and security have to advance together."
Stewart founded Ensignia to help organizations build trusted software. Before Ensignia, Stewart built infrastructure security systems and teams at Brex, Cruise, and CultureAmp, and previously founded and sold Claiming.com.au.
"IT teams want the speed AI promises, but they are not going to hand over their most sensitive systems until they trust it. That trust starts with security," said Stewart. "I've spent years building teams and systems to ensure software gets shipped safely, and that's exactly the rigor Serval's customers need to trust AI with their most sensitive workflows."
Stewart is one of many strategic senior hires Serval has made in recent months. The company is scaling quickly to meet incredible customer demand from large enterprise customers. As the company takes on more consequential, higher-trust work for large enterprises, its security bench is expanding alongside it.
This enterprise demand has translated into rapid growth. Serval closed a $75 million Series B in January 2026, led by Sequoia Capital, valuing the company at $1 billion just months after its Series A. Since launching in 2024, the company has grown to roughly 100 employees and expanded its footprint from IT into HR, Security, Finance, Legal, and other support functions.
This acquisition and new appointment follow the launch of Catalyst, Serval’s automation agent that builds and configures your Serval platform for you, authoring workflows and skills, wiring up integrations and access management, modeling assets, and investigating issues, all from a natural-language conversation.
