AfriKin, the Miami, Florida, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focused on promoting cultural connections through a myriad of art mediums that spark meaningful conversations, is thrilled to announce an upcoming screening of ‘UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné).’

‘UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné)’, a project from Cultures of Resistance Films, offers audiences a glimpse into the lives of women in Guinea-Bissau who are paving the future of sustainable agriculture and social change. The women there are striking remarkable transformation, rising to take their own independence back, challenge patriarchy, and develop self-sufficiency like never before. This generation is defying cultural traditions by standing against female genital mutilation and rejecting forced marriage. A film that explores the unique social norms of the cultures of Bissau in a fresh new light, ‘UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné)’ places women’s rights at the core of an ongoing struggle for liberation as women unite to take back their power.

The screening will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024, at Maison Afrikin at the Scott Galvin Community Center (1600 NE 126th Street, North Miami, FL 33181) from 7pm-9pm. Guests will enjoy an exclusive screening of this groundbreaking 40-minute documentary followed by a question-and-answer session with the film’s director and producer, Iara Lee. Light refreshments will be served in an atmosphere that will encourage guests to delve into the film’s themes of agroecology, women’s empowerment, and leadership.

According to Alfonso Brooks, founder of AfriKin, “FGM is not just a distant issue; it's a global crisis that affects us all. By bringing together communities, engaging in open dialogue, and empowering women through education and leadership, we can break the cycle of oppression. The fight against FGM and the push for women's empowerment is not a women's issue alone—it's a human issue. AfriKin is dedicated to creating safe spaces where we can confront these challenges and work toward a future of equality, dignity, and resilience for all.”

The film’s crew, including Lee and camera/editor João Meirinhos, and the team at AfriKin look forward to welcoming audiences to the upcoming free screening of ‘UNITE FOR BISSAU (Nô Kumpu Guiné).’ See a trailer for the film now and reserve free admission for the upcoming screening at Eventbrite.
