Valencia Drives Europe’s Largest Geothermal Milestone Beneath the Museu de les Ciències

Valencia is positioning itself at the forefront of geothermal energy innovation in Europe with a landmark project: the deployment of a large-scale geothermal plant beneath the iconic Museu de les Ciències, within the architectural complex of the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. The commissioning of the installation is imminent, marking a transformative milestone in the sustainable HVAC decarbonization of major cultural infrastructures.

The project is led by Grupo Itecon through its specialized subsidiary DCL Geoenergía, whose proprietary DCL GEOENERGÍA technology establishes a new European benchmark for high-capacity geothermal systems applied to large-scale landmark buildings.

Grupo Itecon and DCL GEOENERGÍA Technology: Engineering Leadership and Scalability

This flagship development positions the Museu de les Ciències as the largest cultural building in Europe climatized using geothermal energy powered by DCL GEOENERGÍA technology. With an installed thermal capacity of 4,050 kW, the plant becomes the largest geothermal installation in the Valencian Community and one of the most significant urban geothermal systems in Europe.

The DCL GEOENERGÍA geothermal system, engineered and implemented by Grupo Itecon, is based on a high-efficiency field of 32 vertical geothermal boreholes, interconnected through a closed-loop hydraulic circuit. The system leverages the stable subsurface temperature (approximately 20°C year-round) to provide highly efficient heating and cooling through ground-source heat exchange.

During summer operation, excess heat from the building is transferred into the ground. In winter, thermal energy is extracted from the subsurface to supply heating with maximum performance coefficients (COP). The result is a combustion-free, zero direct-emission HVAC solution, delivering energy stability, operational resilience, and a significant reduction in fossil fuel dependency.

Environmental Impact and International Geothermal Benchmark

Through the optimized engineering design developed by Grupo Itecon, the installation is expected to generate annual energy savings exceeding 1,013,000 kWh, while preventing approximately 335,000 kg of CO₂ emissions per year. These performance indicators position DCL GEOENERGÍA technology as a strategic solution for the real decarbonization of large public buildings and high-demand infrastructures.

The imminent commissioning of this geothermal plant represents not only a technical achievement but also a scalable industrial model applicable to airports, hospitals, commercial complexes, and large urban developments across Europe and beyond.

With this project, Grupo Itecon reinforces its international leadership in advanced energy engineering, consolidating DCL GEOENERGÍA technology as a global reference in high-capacity geothermal energy systems. Beneath one of Spain’s most emblematic architectural icons, an invisible, silent, and extraordinarily efficient energy infrastructure is now ready to enter operation — redefining the future of sustainable climate control in large-scale buildings.
