What Happened?

Shares of fashion conglomerate Oxford Industries (NYSE: OXM) fell 17.7% in the afternoon session after the apparel company reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 financial results and lowered its full-year guidance due to challenges at Lilly Pulitzer and macroeconomic consumer pressure. According to the company's press release, Oxford Industries posted net sales of $394.4 million, down 2.2% year-over-year, while adjusted earnings per share rose to $1.34 from $1.26 last year.

GAAP diluted earnings were reported at $3.25 per share, which included a $2.07 per-share benefit from a $42.0 million non-recurring tariff refund and associated interest, according to the release. Tommy Bahama sales grew 0.8% to $230.9 million, but that was offset by sales declines of 5.6% at Lilly Pulitzer and 8.8% at Johnny Was. The retail group cut its full-year adjusted EPS guidance range to between $1.60 and $2.00, down from $2.11 in the prior year, according to the release. Management cited operational hurdles and persistent promotional pressures at Lilly Pulitzer, along with broader macroeconomic pressure on consumer discretionary spend, as the primary reasons for lowering its full-year outlook.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Oxford Industries’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 30 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Oxford Industries and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 12 months ago when the stock gained 22.2% on the news that the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and maintained its full-year financial outlook. The owner of brands like Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer posted adjusted earnings of $1.26 per share, surpassing analyst estimates. This result came despite a year-over-year decline from $2.77 per share in the same period last year.

Quarterly revenue fell 4% to $403.1 million, narrowly missing expectations. While revenue missed and profit margins were pressured, investors were encouraged that the earnings beat forecasts and that the company held its full-year guidance steady. Oxford Industries continues to expect full-year net sales between $1.475 billion and $1.515 billion, with adjusted earnings per share forecasted in the range of $2.80 to $3.20. The market's positive reaction reflects relief that the performance and outlook were not worse amid challenging conditions.

Oxford Industries is down 16.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $30.11 per share, it is trading 41.6% below its 52-week high of $51.58 from September 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Oxford Industries’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $339.27.
