Thompson Innovative Glass, one of North America’s leading glass fabricators, has transformed its IT infrastructure with the world-leading Leostream® Remote Desktop Access Platform, and gained a reliable and secure virtual desktop implementation to serve its employees creating world-class products for commercial, defense, industrial and residential customers.
Thompson IG, based in Fenton, Mich., uses cutting-edge technologies to manufacture high-performance glass products including insulated glass, bullet-resistant glass, antimicrobial glass for medical use, and bird-friendly glass—in virtually unlimited aesthetic choices. Though it has the most advanced glass fabrication capabilities, the company realized its IT environment needed an upgrade to allow its office team to work from home when the global pandemic hit.
Thompson IG initially viewed the Leostream Platform as a fast and efficient way to deploy a VDI solution for remote users and has since continued transitioning away from physical desktops. The new Thompson IG infrastructure now provides significantly greater flexibility for scaling and managing resources. Allowing remote users access to VDI proved to be a major improvement for the organization. The Leostream Platform was easy to set up and simple for remote users to operate, while also providing the scalability needed to support more users and expand the company’s geographical reach.
Thompson IG’s new remote desktop capabilities were deployed in an integration with Scale Computing Platform (SC//Platform) that offers servers, storage, and virtualization in a single appliance for a complete “datacenter in a box.” SC//Platform is streamlined, simple to deploy, simple to manage, and cost-effective, and with the Leostream Platform supports an accessible and user-friendly VDI implementation.
Thompson IG appreciates the flexibility it now has to conserve resources. Its first Scale Computing-Leostream deployment was a three-node cluster, and soon grew to four nodes. During a recent refresh with upgraded SC//Platform hardware that offered expanded capacity, the company was able to return to three nodes.
On a typical weekday, the organization currently runs 20 VDI instances to serve users working remotely, which shrinks to two instances after hours, also saving computing resources. Thompson IG is eager to shift more users to VDI and away from physical desktops.
“Thompson IG is a perfect example of getting more value out of the Leostream Platform than its initial use case, and is seeing how it can benefit overall IT operations,” said Karen Gondoly, Leostream CEO. “Leostream and Scale Computing combine for an infrastructure that is scalable, flexible, and very easy to install and use, and that delivers ongoing ROI for small to midsized environments whose needs can be as diverse and complex as enterprises.”
The Leostream Remote Desktop Access Platform for digital workstation management offers a comprehensive solution for remote access to maintain productivity, control costs, and ensure security with strict authentication and authorization built on zero-trust concepts. Its connection management system eliminates clunky corporate VPNs with an ultra-efficient gateway that gives users access to only the specific resources they have permission to use, automatically, regardless of their location or device. The Leostream Platform shines even in environments that rely on complex, specialty applications like energy and science; large files such as media and entertainment; real-time performance like financial services; and bulletproof network security like government and defense.
