After more than 25 years of coaching, strength coach Sal Alosi has learned that strength training can be adapted to help people of every age and ability train for individual goals and for the performance of life.
-- At Fortitude Gym HQ in Chandler, Arizona, a middle school athlete may be learning the fundamentals of strength training near a professional athlete preparing for another season. An adult may be working to improve strength and body composition while a woman in her 80s trains to maintain muscle and physical capacity.

They share the same training floor but do not follow the same program. That distinction represents a philosophy Alosi has developed over more than 25 years in the profession: strength training is for everyone, but strength training is not the same for everyone.
“You can get bigger. You can get smaller. You can get stronger, faster, more powerful, or more flexible,” Alosi says. “It depends on the person, their goals, and how you apply the training.”

From Athletic Performance to the Performance of Life
Much of Alosi's early career centered on athletic performance. Over time, his view expanded as the same strength-training principles were applied to people with different goals.
An athlete may need to become stronger, faster, or more powerful. An adult may want to improve body composition, build muscle, or move better. An older adult may be focused on maintaining muscle, strength, bone density, balance, and physical independence.
These individuals should not be handed the same workout. Training should reflect current abilities, individual goals, and what is needed to continue progressing. Alosi describes this broader application of strength training as training for the “performance of life.”

Start With the Person, Not the Workout
At Fortitude Gym, every new client begins with an evaluation. Goals are important, but so are training history, ability, age, movement quality, previous injuries, and orthopedic considerations.
A client's goals provide one part of the equation. The evaluation and coaching process help determine what the client needs. An individualized program is built where the two come together.
Three people can train at Fortitude simultaneously while following completely different programs. One may need to build muscle, another may be preparing for competition, and a third may want to become stronger while managing an orthopedic issue. They can train alongside one another without needing to train like one another.
Alosi defines a strength coach as “someone skilled in the art of strength training to help people reach their goals.” Exercise selection, load, repetitions, volume, range of motion, frequency, and progression can all be adjusted according to the desired outcome.
Exercise can make almost anyone tired. Training should have a purpose.

A Harder Workout Is Not Always a Better Workout
Fitness is often judged by how difficult a training session feels, how much someone sweats, or how many calories are burned. None of those measures necessarily indicates whether the training accomplished its intended purpose.
There is a place for hard training, but difficulty should serve a larger plan. Strength training should work alongside appropriate nutrition, sleep, hydration, recovery, and consistency rather than becoming a way to compensate for poor lifestyle choices.
“Strength training isn't about burning calories,” Alosi says. “It's about improving lean body mass.”
Developing and maintaining lean body mass supports body composition and physical capacity. Nutrition must support the goal, while strength training helps develop and preserve lean tissue that contributes to strength and long-term function. Trying to outwork a poor diet is a dead end.
Muscle as Longevity Currency
Developing and maintaining muscle becomes more challenging with age, making the training foundation developed earlier in life increasingly valuable. The objective is not to turn every adult into a bodybuilder. It is to maintain muscle, strength, and physical capacity for the activities that make life meaningful.
Alosi describes muscle as “our longevity currency.” Progressive strength training also provides loading that can support bone health while helping maintain balance, mobility, and the ability to produce force. Its application changes throughout life, and its importance can increase with age.
Young Athletes Need Fundamentals Before Complexity
Social media gives young athletes immediate access to collegiate and professional athletes performing advanced exercises and specialized training methods. Copying an advanced athlete's training, however, does not accelerate development.
At Fortitude Gym HQ, youth strength training begins with foundational movement patterns and developing competency before adding greater load and complexity. A middle school athlete does not need a professional athlete's program. Young athletes need programs appropriate for their current levels of development.
As athletes develop, their training develops with them.
One Training Floor, Many Different Goals
The range of strength-training applications is visible every day at Fortitude Gym HQ. Young athletes learn fundamentals, high school athletes prepare for their sports, and collegiate and professional athletes train during their off-seasons. Adults across multiple generations train for strength, health, body composition, and longevity.
Coaching a middle school athlete requires a different approach than preparing a professional athlete for competition. Both require something different from helping an older adult maintain strength and physical independence.
The ability to apply strength training across that spectrum is part of what defines the coaching at Fortitude Gym HQ. The principles remain consistent, but their application changes with the individual.
That range is not created by asking everyone to fit into one training system. It comes from having a coaching system capable of adapting to the person.
Fortitude clients are connected not by a common workout but by a common process: evaluate the individual, establish the goal, develop the program, coach the training, measure progress, and adjust as needed.
Strength Is Built Over Time
The people who train at Fortitude are not defined by age, profession, athletic background, or current level of strength. They are connected by mindset.
Fortitude is built for driven individuals who value continuous improvement and are willing to commit to the process required to get better.
Progress is rarely a straight line. Setbacks and circumstances may require a training plan to change. Fortitude represents the strength to continue moving forward through adversity, adjusting when necessary without losing sight of the goal.
That mindset applies to an athlete pursuing the next level, an adult working to become stronger, or an older client determined to maintain physical capacity. The goals may be different, but the commitment to improvement remains the same.
The strength coach's role is to understand each person's starting point, determine what is needed, and develop a plan that evolves with the individual. The client's responsibility is to commit to that plan, train consistently, and continue moving forward.
That is the culture Fortitude Gym HQ was built to create: people from different walks of life pursuing different goals, connected by the desire to improve.
Strength through adversity. Continuous improvement. Always moving forward.
Strength Training is for Everyone.
