Inca Rail urges international travelers to book Machu Picchu train tickets months ahead, especially during the May-September high season, to secure preferred dates, train categories, and early-bird pricing.

-- Inca Rail, the rail operator running narrow gauge trains between Cusco and Machu Picchu since 2009, is advising international travelers to secure train tickets months before their planned trip. This guidance applies especially to those traveling during the high season, when preferred departure dates and train categories are most likely to sell out, so booking early gives visitors a better chance of matching their itinerary to their ideal travel dates.

The period from May through September brings the heaviest demand to the Cusco-Machu Picchu corridor, and the high season runs from June 19 through November 2, including certain holidays. During this stretch, daily visitor capacity at Machu Picchu rises above the levels allowed during the rest of the year, and this surge places pressure on train seats, making tickets harder to find for travelers who wait until the last minute.

Given these seasonal patterns, Inca Rail recommends reserving seats at least 30 days before departure during peak periods, though many travelers choose to book months ahead to guarantee availability; booking early can also open access to early-bird discounts, the company notes. Separately, Peru's Ministry of Culture opened sales for Machu Picchu entry tickets covering January 1 through 5, 2026 on November 17, 2025, with the remaining 2026 tickets released in stages afterward.

Once a booking is confirmed, travelers can choose among four train categories offered by Inca Rail, each with a dedicated carriage option called The Private available for groups seeking added exclusivity. The Voyager provides a comfortable ride with panoramic windows, while The 360° adds an open-air observatory car for wider Andean views. The Prime offers additional space and a dedicated dining car, and The First Class serves gourmet cuisine with wine pairings in a more formal setting.

Travelers heading to Machu Picchu from Cusco City can use Inca Rail's Bimodal Service, which departs from the company's ticket office on Av. El Sol 843 and includes a bus ride to Ollantaytambo before boarding the train. Those staying in the Sacred Valley can board directly at Ollantaytambo Station, which offers shorter travel times and more frequent departures throughout the day, making it a convenient option for travelers already based nearby.

Given the seasonal surge in demand and limited seat availability, international visitors planning a Machu Picchu trip are encouraged to book Inca Rail tickets as early as possible. Securing a seat months ahead allows travelers to choose their preferred train category and travel dates without last-minute uncertainty, offering a clearer path to a smooth experience through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu.
