Piersica, Inc., a technology company specializing in ultra-high energy battery solutions, announced it has been awarded approximately a $1.9 million Army SBIR Phase II contract to develop its next-generation technology further.
After completing its prior Army Phase I contract in November 2024, Piersica was eligible to apply for a Phase II grant titled Energy Demand Reduction and Clean Energy Tech. The Army SBIR Program awards Phase II contracts to small businesses that address the Army’s needs with innovative, mature technologies capable of gaining increased federal support.
“We are excited to have earned Piersica’s third Army SBIR Program contract in the last three years,” said Claudiu Bucur, CEO of Piersica, Inc. “This latest funding will allow additional development to be completed, aiding in the maturation of Piersica’s technology, which is critical for the commercialization of future defense applications such as portable electronics, long-range drones, autonomous systems, electric ground vehicles and portable energy weapon platforms. We look forward to working with the U.S. Army on commercializing our next-generation battery technology for a wide range of military applications.”
In addition to funding, the grant provides Piersica with access to technical, acquisition and operational subject matter experts within the U.S. Army. These specialists will provide direction on the technological needs of the Army and mentorship from the Army’s research and development ecosystem. Piersica’s collaboration with the Army SBIR Program will help mature its technology for eventual use in Army acquisition programs.
The funding for this grant project will be utilized for further developing, demonstrating and delivering Piersica’s innovative ultra-high energy density battery technology for commercialization. Over the next 15 months, Piersica will demonstrate the technical feasibility of an ultra-high energy density battery cell by validating a cell prototype with high energy density, capacity and cycle life exceeding current state-of-the-art solutions.
The company utilizes several proprietary innovations, including a proprietary polymer and a lithium-conductive fiber anode mat, to produce Piersica’s high energy and lightweight cells. These technologies enable extended battery capacity for a wide range of rechargeable products, ranging from consumer electronics, including mobile phones, laptops and EVs, to military applications, such as drones, autonomous vehicles and wearable systems. Furthermore, with what will be the highest energy density cell on the market, Piersica is well-positioned to enable emerging markets such as robotics and electric flight.
This is Piersica’s seventh awarded SBIR grant and its second SBIR Phase II grant. Over the last three years, the company has earned a total of $3.8 million in SBIR grants from the U.S. Army, the National Science Foundation and the US Air Force/AFWERX.
About the Army SBIR|STTR Program
Army SBIR regularly releases funding opportunities, including Phase I awards for solutions that demonstrate commercial viability, technical soundness, and feasibility. Companies with mature technologies that meet Phase I standards can advance to Phase II or apply directly for Direct to Phase II contracts. Army experts in technical, acquisition, and operational fields guide businesses to align their innovations with the Army’s critical needs throughout the process.
Army STTR brings small businesses into the Army innovation ecosystem by partnering them with universities, federally funded research and development centers, or qualified nonprofit research institutions. Small businesses serve as prime contractors and perform at least 40% of the work, while research partners complete at least 30%.
