One of Dr. Evans' interests throughout his career has been technological advancement. Part of his general surgery training focused on laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures and he is now an expert in robotic surgery. What I would suggest is that people keep that fire that they had when they started, because they can always be at the head of a conversation rather than being left behind or last," Dr. Evans says.

One particular accomplishment in Dr. Evans' career was establishing a robotics program in Vidalia, Georgia, at the facility where he was working at the time. It took time, but he garnered administrative support and the program expanded quickly. Because of the program's success, within a year and a half, the facility acquired a second robot. Dr. Evans is proud of this endeavor's success and believes robotics will continue to have a significant impact on surgery in the future.

"The minimally invasive aspect of general surgery has expanded so that now there are so many more platforms," Dr. Evans says. "Robotics is going to further expand because there are new, different companies now that are coming on board and there's going to be new approvals. I think that's going to change the way we operate and it's going to be more generic and globalized."

Expanding His Knowledge

One concern Dr. Evans has about health care is that medical providers have been excluded from key decision-making. He has seen that business leaders often lack a medical understanding and he wants to have expertise on both sides of health care. This observation has inspired him to pursue an executive master's degree in business administration to become a chief medical officer or chief executive officer.

Additionally, Dr. Evans has furthered his network and knowledge as a member of the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Christian Medical and Dental Association. In acknowledgment of his expertise, he received the Pillar Award from Memorial Health Meadows Hospital.

The advice Dr. Evans has for those interested in entering the health care industry and becoming surgeons is to be knowledgeable across all areas and to continually learn. "What I would say to those going into surgery going forward is what my mentor said to me: 'A surgeon is really just an internist who operates.' So, you really should know how to manage the whole patient if you need to, not just the part that you'll be excising or repairing," Dr. Evans says.
