Adam Lacko, the 2017 FIA European truck racing champion, will make his off-road rallying debut this season, competing in the FIA European Baja series with Buggyra ZM Racing.
-- The 41-year-old Czech racer, who has spent over three decades competing in karts, cars, and trucks, joins team CEO Martin Koloc and his daughter Aliyyah Koloc in what will be a three-car program by the second half of the season. For Buggyra, the European series itself also represents new territory as the team's rallying experience has so far been concentrated on the FIA Middle East Bajas and the Dakar Rally.
Buggyra ZM Racing conducted a test on Tuesday this week in Bělá pod Bezdězem, approximately 50 kilometers north-east of Prague, in preparation for the upcoming season. Both Martin Koloc and Adam Lacko drove the REVO Red-Lined T1+ GTR during the session.
The team has previously competed in the FIA Middle East Bajas and the Dakar Rally, but the European Baja series represents new ground. Buggyra will participate in the full championship, except for the Greek event, which takes place at the same time as the Taklimakan Rally in China, where the team will take part.
For the first half of the season, the turbo-powered T1+ GTR will be driven by Aliyyah Koloc, while Martin Koloc and Adam Lacko will share the non-turbo version. From the end of July, the team plans to field a third car, allowing all three drivers to compete individually at the remaining events.
"From what I saw today during the test, Adam is doing well and seems comfortable in the car," said Buggyra CEO Martin Koloc. "I hope he will have a good season so that, in the last chapter of his professional career, he can live another great experience."
Lacko, who claimed the European truck racing title in 2017 and has since also competed in GT racing, described the experience as a significant shift. "It is a big change, I did not believe it myself. I am excited about the REVO. It is incredible what the car can do. I am still getting used to it, and with every kilometer I am learning more. But every lap is enjoyable, and I feel good in the car," he said. "I am looking forward to competing in the European Bajas. I will get support from Martin and Aliyyah, who are both much more experienced in off-road rallying than I am."
The most significant adjustment for Lacko will be working with a co-driver for the first time in his career. "That is the biggest challenge for me. I have to learn to listen to the person next to me. For over 30 years, I have raced karts, cars, and trucks on my own, and no one has ever guided me. At most, someone on the radio from the pits. Here I will be dependent on the navigator," he explained.
The name of Lacko's co-driver will be announced ahead of his first race, scheduled for early May.
