The study, titled Body Diversity in Dating: What Fitness Men Actually Want, surveyed 8,000 male users across North America and Europe who reported maintaining regular weight training routines. The findings challenge the common perception that physically active men overwhelmingly prefer slim or athletic partners.
According to the survey, 46 percent of respondents identified curvy women as their preferred partner type, while 33 percent selected women with average body types and 21 percent preferred slim body types.
Researchers also explored the reasons behind these preferences. Among respondents who selected curvy women as their ideal partner, 38 percent cited confidence and authenticity as the most attractive qualities. Another 27 percent pointed to lifestyle compatibility, noting that shared enjoyment of dining and social activities contributed to stronger relationship potential.Many respondents also described curvier body types as embodying a sense of feminine charm and softness that they found appealing, suggesting that attraction was often linked to traditional perceptions of femininity as well as personal compatibility.
Meanwhile, 20 percent associated curvier body types with traditional expressions of femininity, describing curves as a feature that naturally reflects feminine beauty and appeal. Another 15 percent highlighted comfort and affection as important factors in their dating preferences.
The findings reflect broader conversations about evolving beauty standards and the growing acceptance of diverse body types in online dating communities. As dating platforms continue to serve increasingly specialized audiences, user preferences appear to be expanding beyond conventional expectations.
A survey participant from London who regularly trains in the gym said he joined Bustr because it provided a dedicated space to connect with women he found attractive. He noted that confidence, authenticity, and compatibility often play a larger role in relationship success than physical stereotypes.
