RallyClimb launches a continuous singles ladder across 180 San Diego public courts — no seasons, no re-registration, join any day of the year.

-- SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego has 180 public tennis court locations and a climate that lets people use them every month of the year. Most of the county's organized singles leagues still run on a five-to-seven-week season.

Players register, play their matches, the standings reset, and then they wait — often several weeks — before signing up again. The courts never close. The competition does.

RallyClimb has opened a continuous singles ladder for the county built the other way around. It runs without seasons: players join on any day, are matched with others near their level, arrange the match between themselves, and the result moves them along a single standing that never resets.

The ladder spans five areas — Central San Diego, La Jolla and UTC, North County Coastal, North County Inland, and South Bay — with the 180 court locations mapped so players can see what is nearby before agreeing to a match. That, more than anything else, decides whether a match actually gets played.

Levels run 2.5 to 5.0. A level opens for ranked play only once eight players at that level have committed — a deliberate constraint meant to avoid the way most ladders die, with an early joiner signing up and finding nobody to play. Until a level reaches that threshold, play there is free and unranked; nobody is charged for a ladder that has not opened.

Ranked ladder membership is $29 a month. Casual matches are free. The membership carries a three-match monthly guarantee: if the ladder does not produce three matches a player can accept in a month, that month is refunded.

RallyClimb operates in 17 US metros and is run by Ryan Heger, who is based in Seattle and also runs First Serve Seattle, a public-court availability service.

"The math never worked," Heger said. "You pay for a five-week season, you're out of town for ten days of it, and you come back with no realistic way to get the rest of your matches in. You've paid for a season you can't finish. Then I wait a week or two for the new season to start."
