Federal Steel Systems announced the launch of a new online 3D design tool intended to help customers configure steel building packages before requesting a quote. The company said the tool allows buyers to visualize a building in 3D, select dimensions, doors, windows, colors, roof settings, and other features, and then submit those specifications directly to the Federal Steel Systems team as part of the quoting process.

According to Federal Steel Systems, the tool was introduced to give customers a clearer way to work through design decisions before moving into pricing and engineered drawings, particularly for buyers who may know what they need functionally but want a more concrete visual representation of the finished structure.
Federal Steel Systems said the new tool is designed to support a wide range of building categories in its portfolio, including commercial, industrial, agricultural, self-storage, aviation, large clear-span, religious, and residential projects. The company said customers can use the platform to define the basic structure and refine key details themselves, creating a more complete starting point for conversations about quoting, permitting, and package development.
In outlining the purpose of the launch, Federal Steel Systems said steel building purchases often require customers to make decisions about width, length, height, openings, roof type, and exterior finishes before they have a reliable visual reference. The company said the 3D design tool is meant to improve that stage of the process by letting customers see changes in real time as they adjust a design, rather than relying only on phone discussions or static sketches to communicate what they want.
“Customers often have a clear idea of how they want a building to function, but it can be more difficult to translate that into specifications without a visual tool,” added Turner. “This launch gives customers a way to work through core design decisions in 3D before submitting a quote request, which helps create a more informed starting point for the next stage of the project.”
According to the company, users do not need CAD experience to use the tool. Federal Steel Systems said the online platform was built to let customers set dimensions, place openings, select colors and panel options, review roof settings, and add accessories through an interface that updates the model as changes are made. Once a design is submitted, the company said its team can review the specified configuration and continue the project through quote development and permit-ready engineered drawings.
Federal Steel Systems said the design tool also supports customers exploring cold formed steel building packages, which the company describes as a practical option for buyers seeking a simpler and more economical structure. According to the company, those packages can be engineered to local code and snow load requirements and may include features such as stamped engineered foundation plans, commercial-grade specifications, bolt-together framing, and galvanized framing. The company added that cold formed structures may be particularly relevant for customers evaluating workshops, storage buildings, and other permanent building applications, including projects that may benefit from economical lean-tos and mezzanines.
The company said the addition of these options to the design process is intended to give customers a better way to compare building configurations before entering the quoting stage. Federal Steel Systems added that, for buyers considering a cold formed structure, the 3D tool provides an opportunity to review layout, proportions, openings, and exterior appearance in advance, including configurations designed to deliver a conventional steel building look while aligning with project-specific needs.
