TurnKey Pool Designers, a licensed pool design and renovation company serving thirteen Louisiana communities, has published a new educational resource examining how pool covers reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs for residential pool owners.

The resource addresses one of the most frequently overlooked aspects of pool ownership: the relationship between evaporation and energy loss. An uncovered pool loses between a quarter and half an inch of water each day through evaporation. Each pound of water evaporating at 80 degrees Fahrenheit removes roughly 1,048 BTUs of energy from the pool, meaning a substantial portion of a homeowner's heating costs can be traced directly to uncovered surface loss.

The publication details four categories of energy-efficient pool covers currently available to residential owners. Solar covers float directly on the water surface and can raise water temperature by 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit while cutting evaporation by up to 95 percent. Thermal blankets, constructed from multi-layered polyethylene or vinyl, focus on overnight heat retention rather than solar gain and can reduce heating costs by 50 to 70 percent. Automatic covers use motorized tracks to control evaporation like other covers, but they are easier to use every day because you can open and close them with a button. Security covers, made from heavy-duty mesh or solid vinyl, are designed for households with children or pets and provide meaningful reductions in both heat loss and chemical evaporation.

Beyond heat retention, the publication explains that pool covers deliver additional operational savings through chemical retention and debris prevention. Chlorine and other pool chemicals evaporate along with water when a pool is left uncovered, and reducing that process with a fitted cover keeps water balanced longer while decreasing the frequency of chemical additions throughout the swimming season. Covers also prevent leaves, insects, and other debris from entering the water, reducing the workload on filtration systems and lowering energy draw on pool pumps over time.

"Pool owners ask us all the time how to reduce what it costs to keep a pool running, and the cover is consistently where we point them first," said a spokesperson at TurnKey Pool Designers. "There are no equipment changes required and no disruption to how someone uses their pool. Covering it between uses is one of the simplest habits a homeowner can adopt, and the savings compound quickly over a full season."

The U.S. Department of Energy has confirmed that consistent cover use reduces evaporation by up to 90 percent over a season. The publication notes that fit and daily consistency are the primary factors in achieving maximum results. Custom-fitted covers are recommended for non-rectangular and freeform pools, as any gap in coverage allows heat and moisture to continue escaping, which limits the savings potential of the cover regardless of its type.

The new resource extends TurnKey Pool Designers' library of educational content on pool ownership, maintenance, and efficiency. The company, which holds residential license and commercial licenses in Louisiana, has previously been noted for its operations across thirteen communities spanning multiple parishes, a geographic footprint established in prior company announcements. Its service categories encompass custom pool design, pool design, pool remodel, and pool renovation, with projects serving both new construction and existing pool modification needs.

Pool owners in the company's service territory may contact TurnKey Pool Designers at (504) 386-3724 to discuss cover selection or to arrange a consultation on pool design, renovation, or remodeling services.
