What happened?

Shares of online accommodations platform Airbnb (NASDAQ: ABNB) jumped 9.1% in the morning session after the company reported third-quarter financial results that exceeded Wall Street estimates and authorized a new $12 billion share repurchase program.

According to a company press release, Airbnb generated third-quarter revenue of $4.87 billion, up 18.9% year on year, and GAAP earnings of $3.17 per share. Both results exceeded Wall Street consensus estimates. Gross booking value rose 21% to $27.7 billion, supported by 155 million nights and experiences booked. In addition, the company's board of directors authorized a new $12 billion share repurchase program.

During the earnings call, CFO Ellie Mertz highlighted ongoing investment in growth initiatives while maintaining profitability, noting that “the prioritization around continuing this momentum continues to be the top priority.”.

What is the market telling us

Airbnb’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 9 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 4 days ago when the stock gained 5% on the news that Crude oil prices plunged more than 7% on hopes of Middle East diplomatic progress, lowering the projected cost of moving people and goods. In market coverage carried by CNBC, consumer discretionary advanced 3% during morning trade as capital rotated toward cyclical groups.

Airbnb is up 40.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $186.28 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $190.50 from August 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Airbnb’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $932.23.
