What Happened?

Shares of natural gas producer Comstock Resources (NYSE: CRK) jumped 4.2% in the afternoon session after U.S. natural gas futures climbed, supported by a recent drop in production and forecasts for stronger demand over the next two weeks.

At the same time, flows to major U.S. liquified natural gas (LNG) export terminals increased in April, nearing record levels. Adding to the positive outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projected that LNG exports could increase by 30% in the coming year. Prices advanced even as the EIA reported a larger-than-average injection into storage, signaling strong market sentiment.

After the initial pop the shares cooled down to $16.96, up 4.2% from previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Comstock Resources’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 42 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 15 days ago when the stock dropped 6.3% as signals of de-escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict caused oil prices to fall, removing a key support for the energy sector.

The drop in crude prices came after President Trump suggested the U.S. could wind down its military campaign against Iran within weeks, and Iran's president stated a readiness to end the war. This news unwound the "war premium" that had boosted oil stocks during the conflict. As a result, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil fell about 2% to trade below $101 a barrel. The decline was also fueled by traders taking profits after a strong run in energy stocks.

Comstock Resources is down 28.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $16.96 per share, it is trading 44.8% below its 52-week high of $30.74 from June 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Comstock Resources’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $3,440.
