What Happened?

Shares of infrastructure solutions provider Quanta (NYSE: PWR) jumped 4.6% in the afternoon session after Piper Sandler upgraded the stock to Strong-Buy, citing strong demand for artificial intelligence power infrastructure and grid modernization.

The upgrade highlighted Quanta's positioning to benefit from substantial energy requirements driven by data centers and ongoing electrical grid enhancements. Investor confidence was further reinforced by the company's record $53.4 billion project backlog, as well as the appointment of Ellen Rubin to its board of directors per TipRanks. In addition to company-specific catalysts, the stock benefited from a broader sector-wide rally as institutional capital rotated into infrastructure and electrical services providers.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $646.95, up 4.6% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Quanta’s shares are quite volatile and have had 17 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 4 months ago when the stock gained 14.7% on the news that the company reported record first-quarter 2026 results that significantly exceeded analyst expectations and raised its full-year financial outlook. The infrastructure services provider posted adjusted earnings per share of $2.68, well above the consensus estimate of $2.03 and a substantial increase from $1.78 in the same quarter of the previous year. Revenue for the quarter reached $7.87 billion, a 26.3% year-over-year increase, handily surpassing estimates of $7.06 billion. In addition to the strong quarterly performance, the company's total backlog hit a record $48.5 billion. Based on the strong start to the year, Quanta raised its full-year 2026 guidance, now forecasting revenue between $34.7 billion and $35.2 billion and adjusted diluted earnings per share in the range of $13.55 to $14.25.

Quanta is up 47.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $646.95 per share, it is still trading 17.6% below its 52-week high of $785.24 from May 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Quanta’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $5,618.
