This April, OneLegacy, the nonprofit organ procurement organization serving seven counties in Southern California, joins hundreds of organizations nationwide to honor National Donate Life Month with a series of events aimed at inspiring more people to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors.
More than 100,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, including more than 20,000 in California. Behind every number is a person, a parent, child, or a friend, waiting for a second chance at life, yet fewer than 1% of deaths meet the criteria for organ donation. A single organ donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of up to 75 others through cornea and tissue donation.
National Donate Life Month recognizes the generosity of donors and their families while highlighting the urgent need for more registered donors. Throughout April, OneLegacy will host dozens of outreach, education, and awareness events across Southern California, including:
- OneLegacy Donate Life Run/Walk – OneLegacy will host its 24th annual Donate Life Run/Walk at Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, April 25. More than 3,000 participants are expected to attend, celebrating the gift of life alongside donor families, recipients, and supporters. Registration is available at www.OneLegacyRunWalk.org.
- Tower Buzzers MiLB Baseball Game – OneLegacy will partner with the Ontario Tower Buzzers, Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, for a Community Spotlight game on Thursday, April 16, at 6:35 p.m. at ONT Field. Fans can purchase tickets through this link, with 50% of proceeds supporting OneLegacy’s mission. The event will include special giveaways and a ceremonial first pitch.
- Flags Across America – OneLegacy will collaborate with more than 200 hospitals, transplant centers, and community partners to raise the Donate Life flag throughout April. This national initiative, launched in 2009, honors donors and raises awareness about the importance of organ donation. OneLegacy will participate in more than 25 flag-raising ceremonies across its service area.
- Blue and Green Spirit Week (April 4–11) – OneLegacy invites the community to show support by wearing blue and green. On April 11, hospitals, transplant centers, and community partners will host local events, while city halls and landmarks across Southern California will be illuminated in blue and green throughout the month.
- Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Partnership – For more than 20 years, OneLegacy has partnered with local DMV offices to provide education about organ donation. In 2026, the organization will continue outreach efforts at dozens of DMV locations, focusing on communities with the lowest donor registration rates.
- LAFF4LIFE Comedy Events for Registered Donors – Throughout April, registered organ donors can receive free tickets to comedy shows at IMPROV and Levity Live locations nationwide. LAFF4LIFE, founded by double-organ recipient and comedian Jamie Alcroft, continues to raise awareness through entertainment. Learn more at improv.com/donors and levitylive.com/donors.
- City Proclamations – OneLegacy Ambassadors will partner with local leaders to secure Donate Life Month proclamations across Southern California. More than 100 ambassadors will share their personal stories and help raise awareness in their communities.
“My son Ivan Sandoval was an organ donor and he saved three lives,” says OneLegacy Ambassador, Regina Meaux who honors her five-year-old son’s memory at events throughout Donate Life Month. “It’s powerful to come out and tell our stories and connect with other people who have experienced the same thing and spread the word that organ, eye and tissue donation does save lives.”
“We look forward to expanding our presence in the communities we serve during Donate Life Month,” said Prasad Garimella, Chief Executive Officer at OneLegacy. “Through partnerships with hospitals, transplant centers, community organizations, and local leaders, we are working to inspire more people to register as donors and help save and heal lives.”
The need for organ donation transcends all communities, including differences in race, ethnicity, religion, and background. Registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor is simple and can be done online at OneLegacy.org/register or by saying “yes” at your local DMV.
