What happened?

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after election results confirmed that Democrats reclaimed majorities in the House and Senate, easing regulatory uncertainty around drug pricing policy.

As reported by CNBC, Wall Street analysts project that the biopharmaceutical sector's recovery will strengthen in the wake of the congressional election outcome. Investors had feared potential disruptions to healthcare policies, but analysts noted that drug pricing legislation is unlikely to dominate the new legislative agenda. Prior statutory frameworks already established expanding annual Medicare price negotiations, meaning existing government policies will remain intact without unexpected new restrictions.

Furthermore, broader equity markets and index futures rebounded as investors interpreted the shifting balance of power in Washington as a stabilizing dynamic. The presence of congressional checks and balances is widely viewed by market strategists as a moderating force on executive policy decisions, creating a predictable regulatory climate that supports ongoing investments across pharmaceutical and biotechnology developers.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming in on UFP Technologies (UFPT)

UFP Technologies’s shares are quite volatile and have had 15 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for UFP Technologies and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock gained 18.5% on the news that the company reported impressive second-quarter 2026 results that surpassed Wall Street expectations on both the top and bottom lines. Revenue grew 15.1% year-over-year to $174 million, beating analyst estimates by over 9%. The company also posted adjusted earnings of $2.92 per share, which was 14.2% higher than the consensus forecast of $2.56. Profitability was a key highlight as well, with adjusted EBITDA of $36.39 million coming in 11.5% ahead of expectations.

The strong all-around performance in the quarter signaled healthy demand and solid operational management, which pleased investors.

UFP Technologies is up 51.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $337.45 per share, it has set a new 52-week high. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of UFP Technologies’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $5,195.
