Designer Lucie Koldova Steps Down as BROKIS Art Director After 13 Years
Czech designer continues creating collections for BROKIS while brand enters new creative phase

LONDON, UK - Lucie Koldova, the Czech designer who has shaped BROKIS's visual identity for over a decade, is stepping down from her role as the lighting brand's art director. The transition, announced as BROKIS celebrates its 20th anniversary, marks a shift in how one of the design world's most distinctive partnerships will operate moving forward.

Koldova will continue designing collections for BROKIS. What changes is her role in the brand's broader creative direction and day-to-day visual leadership.

Thirteen years of defining a brand

Koldova's collaboration with BROKIS began in 2010 with two collections — Muffins and Balloons — designed while she was living and working in Paris. The voluminous handblown glass designs established BROKIS as an innovative force in contemporary lighting and quickly became signature pieces that defined the brand's aesthetic direction.

Over thirteen years as art director, Koldova created dozens of collections for BROKIS while simultaneously shaping the brand's product portfolio, visual identity, and creative strategy. Her designs are now sold in over 100 countries, and her influence extends beyond individual collections to the brand's entire approach to handblown glass production.

Collections including Prisma, Ivy, Puro, Overlay, Mona, and Shadows demonstrate Koldova's design language — breathtaking color combinations, unusual proportions, and formal contrasts that push the boundaries of what handblown glass can achieve technically and aesthetically.

"Her sensitivity to material, light, and detail has significantly influenced the brand's identity and helped firmly establish it on the global design scene," says Jan Rabell, owner of BROKIS.

Beyond design — technical innovation

Koldova's impact on BROKIS extends beyond aesthetics. She introduced technological and formal solutions that enabled the brand to push the limits of handblown glass production at Janštejn Glassworks, where BROKIS lighting has been produced since 2006.

The Puro collection, for example, required developing entirely new production techniques for creating perfectly cylindrical handblown glass tubes. The Ivy collection demanded precision in controlling glass thickness across branching forms. These weren't purely design challenges — they required close collaboration with master glassmakers to develop new approaches to centuries-old craft.

This combination of design vision and production knowledge made Koldova's role as art director particularly influential. She didn't just design products; she helped shape what BROKIS could manufacture.

What continues, what changes

From April 2026, Koldova focuses exclusively on designing new BROKIS collections rather than overseeing the brand's broader creative direction. She remains actively involved in collection development, with current projects including an expansion of the Starcloud collection (launching at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen) and additional work planned for Designblok in Prague.

For interior designers specifying BROKIS lighting, the practical implication is continuity. Koldova's existing collections remain in production, and new Koldova-designed collections will continue to launch. What shifts is the internal structure of how BROKIS develops its creative strategy and product portfolio.

The brand enters what Rabell describes as "the next stage of its creative and commercial development" — a transition that allows both BROKIS and Koldova greater space for new directions while maintaining their long-standing collaboration.

A designer whose work defines contemporary Czech glass

Lucie Koldova's influence on contemporary lighting design extends well beyond her work with BROKIS. Her portfolio includes furniture, gallery pieces, and limited-edition works that have been exhibited internationally and acquired by design museums.

Her approach to glass — treating it as a medium for exploring light, color, and form rather than simply as a functional material — has influenced how a generation of designers thinks about handblown production. The fact that her most iconic collections for BROKIS feel simultaneously playful and technically sophisticated reflects her ability to make complex craftsmanship appear effortless.

As BROKIS moves into its third decade, Koldova's collections will continue to represent a significant portion of the brand's portfolio. The partnership that began with two collections in 2010 has produced some of the most recognizable lighting designs in contemporary Czech glass — and that work continues, even as the structure of the collaboration evolves.
