Howrah Plumbing has stepped in to secure jobs and ensure that the capability of one of Tasmania’s best-known specialist plumbing businesses, Nu-Jet, remains locally owned and operated.

Machos Pty Ltd trading as ‘Nu-Jet’ entered voluntary administration in late March 2025. The Administrator, Adam Johnston of Apex Advisory Australia, has traded the business on and entered into an agreement for the sale of assets to Howrah Plumbing.

Managing Director of Howrah Plumbing, Cath McDowell, has also offered roles to nearly all of Nu-Jet’s employees, preserving local jobs and keeping key skills in Tasmania.

“This is a great outcome for staff, customers and the community,” Ms McDowell said.

“Nu-Jet has been a leader in its field for more than two decades. By bringing the capabilities of Nu-Jet under the Howrah Plumbing umbrella, we’ve secured those specialist skills and made sure they stay right here in Tasmania.

“Not only are we securing these jobs, we’re giving Nu-Jet workers new opportunities too, like working on the Elizabeth Street Pier development.”

The purchase means Tasmanian councils, businesses and households will continue to have access to Nu-Jet’s expertise, backed by the long-standing reputation and resources of Howrah Plumbing.

“Howrah Plumbing is committed to innovation and training, and by bringing Nu-Jet’s assets and skilled workforce into the Howrah Plumbing business, it ensures we can continue to grow a strong local market presence,” Ms McDowell said.

“Keeping ownership and jobs in Tasmania was the most important thing. We’re proud that Tasmanian businesses can support each other and protect local employment.”

Howrah Plumbing, established in 1982, employs nearly 50 staff and has trained more than 150 apprentices over the past four decades. Nu-Jet, founded in 2004, is widely respected for its innovation in pipe relining and sewer infrastructure rehabilitation.

The specialist capabilities developed by Nu-Jet will continue to operate under the Howrah Plumbing banner.
