Philanthropist Ed Freedman of Stable Road Foundation joined an all-star cast of Hawaiian athletes, scientists, and celebrities—including his friends Woody Harrelson and Laura Louie—for the successful launch of KULEANA, a feature-length documentary aimed at inspiring action to protect marine ecosystems.

KULEANA made its global premiere in Honolulu on October 23, as part of the Hawaiian International Film Festival (HIFF). A subsequent screening was held November 9 on Maui, with Freedman and his Stable Road Foundation team attending both events.

“Protecting our natural environment has been a core focus of Stable Road Foundation for as long as we’ve existed,” said Freedman, founder of Stable Road Foundation. “Our work is committed to helping communities both here on Maui and around the world, and tackling plastic pollution is a challenge that unites us all. We believe KULEANA will be a powerful catalyst for motivating people to protect our oceans so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Narrated by Woody Harrelson and directed by Georgia Scott, KULEANA was hailed by Maui News as a “visually stunning” exposé of the plastic crisis currently facing the world’s oceans, with over 10 million tons of plastic entering the oceans each year.

By 2050, experts predict that the amount of plastic in the oceans will outweigh all marine life.

KULEANA’s production company, GroundTruth Productions, will launch an impact campaign next year with Stable Road Foundation and the globally respected nonprofit Ocean Conservancy. Plans for the campaign include beach cleanups, educational outreach, and community-wide mobilization efforts to promote policy change for reducing single-use plastics.

Freedman, who has personally led Stable Road Foundation’s previous beach cleanup projects on Maui and around the world (along with the Foundation’s environmental education efforts with local partners like Hawaii Land Trust), says he sees the impact campaign as a key component of the Foundation’s work heading into 2026.

“Protecting our natural environment has been a core focus of Stable Road Foundation for as long as we’ve existed,” said [founder Ed] Freedman. "We believe KULEANA will be a powerful catalyst for motivating people to protect our oceans."
